With a desire to spend more time with family and to gain more control over their destiny, Patty Fisher and her husband Cory set out to own a business. Patty sold insurance and maintained regular business hours, but Cory was working 12-hour shifts as a tool and die maker. Patty and Cory discovered an opportunity to become small-business owners when they learned a Dentist’s Choice was for sale 35 miles from their home in Golden, Colorado. Patty had a sales and marketing background thanks to her time in the insurance industry, and Cory was good with his hands, having worked as a machinist and an auto mechanic. Plus, he loved tinkering. The simplicity of the concept appealed to both Patty and Cory. They bought the franchise in 2006 and started with 30 customers covering half of Colorado. Today, Patty and Cory are fixing handpieces for 300 clients.

DC: What has the flexible scheduling of owning a Dentist’s Choice franchise allowed you to do?
Patty: The number one thing is I get to have my grandchildren, who are 4 years and 6 months old, here when their parents need us for babysitting. Cory and I can also travel whenever we want. We like to go on Caribbean cruises with our whole family.
DC: Are you able to spend more time with family now versus what you were doing before for work?
Patty: We definitely spend a lot more time with our family as Dentist’s Choice franchise owners. Previously, Cory was working 12-hour shifts, four days a week as a machinist. So, carving out the time we wanted to spend with family was difficult for him to do. My schedule as an insurance salesperson was a little more flexible than his, but we wanted to spend time with family together. Getting the time together as a couple was hard. But, now we can drop everything at any time to spend time with our kids or grandkids if we have to.
DC: How has your lifestyle changed since owning a Dentist’s Choice franchise?
Patty: We have more freedom to do what we want to do and when we want to do it. Before owning our Dentist’s Choice franchise, we had to fit the things that were important to us around our employers’ schedules.
DC: What is a typical day like for you?
Patty: Cory and I have breakfast together. We don’t have to hurry. I may go for a walk after breakfast and he might play golf on the computer for a little bit. Then, he goes down to the shop in our basement to work on handpieces, and I go up to the office to work. I spend time on the phone, talking with doctors and doing bookkeeping and shipping. Sometimes, I’ll go down to the shop to log in handpieces we’ve received. I also go out to pick up handpieces, or I might work on some marketing to develop new clients. Most days I come back to the house for lunch before I go out again. I tend to return home by 3 p.m. My husband and I definitely have shared responsibilities.
