Name: Dave Pearson
Dentist’s Choice Franchisee Since: April 1997
Service Area: Southern and Central Idaho
Dave Pearson worked as a mechanical engineer for 30 years before becoming a Dentist’s Choice franchisee. He decided to leave his job and open up his own business because he was tired of the long hours and corporate life. He also wanted the autonomy that goes along with being a business owner. Dave looked into different franchise opportunities and was drawn to The Dentist’s Choice. Although he had no prior experience in the dental equipment repair industry, he had a familiarity with other mechanical equipment. The Dentist’s Choice appealed to Dave because it was an interesting business opportunity with low overhead expenses.
QUESTION & ANSWER
DC: What advice do you have for individuals who want to own their own franchise?
DAVE: Customer service is extremely important. You need to work hard to establish trusted, reliable relationships with clients. You also really want to establish repeat business, so you’re not constantly out on the road looking for new customers. The best way to promote repeat business is by giving the customers a great experience at the onset, so customer service shouldn’t be taken lightly. Sometimes smaller clients turn into bigger clients as well, adding different offices or referring their friends and colleagues. Treating every client like your most important one is key to establishing these solid relationships.
DC: How many hours do you typically put in? How has it evolved over the years?
DAVE: I generally put in anywhere from four to eight hours a day during the week. I try to keep my hours pretty consistent, although they somewhat depend on when dentists’ offices are open. That can be a benefit because you don’t feel pressured to work during weekends or off times.
DC: What’s your favorite thing about being a franchisee of The Dentist’s Choice?
DAVE: I really enjoy the freedom it allows me. I have flexibility with my scheduling and other operational aspects. Although I have plenty of support from corporate, they are not overbearing. They really allow you the freedom to run your business how you want, without many restrictions at all. The corporate team is there for guidance and support, but they trust you enough to give you freedom with decision making.
