SUCCESS PROFILE | The Dentist’s Choice Provides Franchisee Home-Based Business with Growing Client Base

Name: Tony Davis

Launched His Dentist’s Choice Franchise: March 2000

Service Area: Southern Indiana and Northern Kentucky

Before becoming a Dentist’s Choice franchisee, Tony Davis worked at a steel company for five years. He was looking into different entrepreneurship opportunities when he came across The Dentist’s Choice. Tony was attracted to the niche industry and the low-overhead cost franchise opportunity. After doing their due diligence, Tony and his wife Teresa opened up their own Dentist’s Choice and quickly began building up their client base.

QUESTION & ANSWER

DC: How many hours do you typically put in? How has it evolved over the years?

Tony: It depends on the day, what I plan to get accomplished on that given day and how many service calls I have. Every day is different, which I really like. There are some similarities with my previous job – especially the hands-on work – but having variation in my daily routine is really nice. At the beginning, I worked long hours on getting new clients, which obviously takes time. Once you build up a base, you get a lot of repeat business. I still work eight hours doing repairs and my wife Teresa continues doing service calls and adding to our customer base.

DC: What’s your favorite thing about being a Dentist’s Choice franchisee?

Tony: I really enjoy that I can work from home. I have a lot of flexibility in my schedule that I didn’t have before, which has been really nice family-wise. When I first started, I had two younger children, so it was nice to be able to have that flexibility if need be. I could take off work during the day for different school functions, or if they needed me for something. It’s also nice to be able to take vacations and still be able to work remotely, following up with my customers while I’m away.

DC: What advice do you have for individuals who want to own their own franchise?

Tony: Before making any business or investment decision, make sure you do your due diligence and research. For franchises, call every existing franchisee you can find, and ask them what they enjoy or don’t enjoy about the company. They all have different perspectives and insights, and this really is one of the best indicators of a sound business opportunity. If the franchisees are happy with their business and the brand, you know it’s a good option. Also make sure you can see yourself with the business long-term. When I was looking at different opportunities, I kept asking myself, “Is this something I can see myself doing until retirement?” You don’t want to invest your time in something you can’t see being beneficial in the long term.
