LIVIN’ THE LIFE PROFILE | Work-Life Balance is Easily Achieved with The Dentist’s Choice

Name: Teri & Ron Bogden

Franchisee Since: 2002

Service Area: Utah

Teri and Ron Bogden purchased an existing Dentist’s Choice franchise in 2002 to gain a new, steady income stream that would also allow the flexibility to maintain their full-time jobs in dentistry and mining. As their priorities changed, so did the hours they put into their Dentist’s Choice franchise.

QUESTION & ANSWER:

DC: How have you balanced operating a Dentist’s Choice franchise with your full-time job and personal life?

TERI: My husband and I maintained our regular full-time jobs and operating our Dentist’s Choice franchise for several years, but as our family continued growing we knew we had to make some changes. I couldn’t be in three places at one time, so I decided to focus on The Dentist’s Choice and stay home with our newborn. The franchise has offered us so many opportunities as well as the income and flexibility needed to live the life of our dreams. We can have a normal eight-hour day or we can go fishing all day and make up for it later. Our rule is: just get it done timely and keep the doctor happy. This is living life our way!

DC: What hobbies/passions has the flexible scheduling of owning a Dentist’s Choice franchise allowed you to pursue?

TERI: Our son played college baseball, so we were able to attend every game across the country and take family vacations in conjunction with those. Without the flexibility we gained from owning or own business, we wouldn’t have been able to do this. I was able to answer business calls on the road, let customers know that there would be a pick up of their handpieces scheduled in our absence and assure them that the repaired handpieces would be delivered promptly when we returned. We have developed a high level of trust with our customers – they know we’ll do what we say. It’s refreshing to be able to book a vacation without worrying about it. Just knowing the business is still functioning even if we’re not present is satisfying. We get to decide how to live our life.

DC: What does a typical workday look like?

TERI: We typically start the day around 8 or 9 a.m. with invoicing and packaging the handpieces that had been repaired the day before and planning the pickups for the day. We leave around 10 or 11 a.m. to drop off the repaired handpieces and pick up ones that need to be fixed. We return to the office in the afternoon. From there, we check in the handpieces and repair them for a few hours. Then, the evening can be whatever you want it to be – work, rest or play. We then start all over again the next morning.

You get to choose what your day looks like and what works best for you. We typically market to practices in the areas where we’re already picking up handpieces or delivering repaired handpieces, but I’m working on creating a regular route that will help us encompass the whole state. This will change how our normal day looks because on some days we might be focused more on marketing and the repairs might need to wait a day.
