Before becoming franchisees for The Dentist’s Choice, Mike worked for a trucking company and Charlotte worked in catering in California. But after many years, they decided it was time to make a lifestyle change. The Youngs wanted to build their own business and work for themselves. They researched different franchise opportunities and found The Dentist’s Choice to be a good fit.

The Youngs moved to Alabama and opened up their first franchise in 1999. Their business was extremely successful, although neither Charlotte nor Mike had prior experience within the dental industry. After several years in business with The Dentist’s Choice, the Youngs opened more locations, spanning all territories in Alabama and Georgia.

QUESTION & ANSWER

DC: What do you enjoy most about owning your Dentist’s Choice?

CHARLOTTE: We have a lot of flexibility in our schedules, but we reinvested a lot of that extra time back into the business. My husband and I both enjoy building the business for ourselves, instead of working for someone else. I also really enjoy the work and all the clients. After years and years of working with them, they become like your friends and not just your customers.

DC: What is it like working with your husband?

CHARLOTTE: One of the reasons Mike and I wanted to open our own business was so that we could spend more time together. We knew going into it that the dynamic would be very different, since we weren’t used to working together before. It can be challenging at times, but it’s also very rewarding. When you’re building a business, most of your time goes into that, so we were glad to be spending that time together. One of the keys to making it work as a husband and wife in business together is delegation. You can’t try to control or micro-manage what the other person is doing, and you just need to trust them. It takes a lot of hard work, but we love what we are doing.

 DC: What advice do you have for new franchisees?

CHARLOTTE: You get out of it what you put into it. It’s hard work, but if you’re really dedicated and put the time in, along with making sound business decisions, you can be very profitable. The Dentist’s Choice is a great opportunity because they have a proven model and framework to help you succeed. My husband and I didn’t have prior experience in the dental industry, but we were able to really succeed in this business because of hard work and support from The Dentist’s Choice.

 You also need to make sure you’re playing to your strengths and getting creative with your business strategies. Since I was in catering, I bake cookies every week since becoming a Dentist’s Choice franchisee and take them with me to all my dentist’s offices. It’s so simple, but it’s a really effective marketing technique. After a little while, everyone knew me as “the cookie lady” and knew about our business.
