Teri and Ron Bogden purchased an existing Dentist’s Choice franchise in 2002 to gain a new, steady income stream that would also allow them the flexibility to maintain their full-time jobs. For several years, the Bogdens operated their franchise part-time, while working full-time in dentistry and mining. Teri eventually worked on Dentist’s Choice full-time after their fourth child was born, while Ron kept his full-time job in mining for several years. Their Dentist’s Choice business has continuously grown year after year, and now their son, Greyson, is also part of the family business.

QUESTION & ANSWER:

DC: Describe your most memorable customer experience.

 TERI: There have been a couple of instances that stand out. For example, I was able to help a customer that was going on a humanitarian mission to Kenya and didn’t have the necessary equipment. He asked if there was any way we could contribute by providing any old handpieces. We didn’t have any refurbished handpieces at the time. So instead, we used our wholesale pricing advantage to buy them brand new handpieces. It was a neat experience. He sent us photos from Kenya showing his team using the handpieces. The handpieces were a needed piece of equipment for the mission trip – without the handpieces, they couldn’t have made it happen. I also frequently receive letters from doctors with their payments, thanking us for our service. This job doesn’t go without appreciation – it’s really special.

 DC: Have you ever had to “save the day” for a dentist?

TERI: I had a dentist frantically call me one morning because three of his handpieces had broken down and he was going to have to cancel all the afternoon appointments if he didn’t get them repaired. I calmed him down and assured him that I would be there before lunch and bring back the repaired handpieces by the time he got back from lunch. He was so grateful and has been a long-standing client ever since.

 Our flexibility to jump on projects and the ability to make exceptions are some of the greatest benefits we’re able to offer dentists. His other option would have been to go through one of the big competitors, who follow a strict protocol and aren’t able to be flexible. He could have waited weeks just to find out what was wrong with the handpieces. Can you imagine how much revenue he would have lost?
